So, you’re visiting Alicanteโ€ฆ but only for a few hours?

Maybe you’re arriving on a cruise. Maybe youโ€™ve escaped for a weekend. Or maybe your road trip gives you just one day here. Whatever the reason โ€” welcome. Youโ€™ve picked a Mediterranean gem, and Iโ€™m here to help you make the most of it.

As a local tour guide who explores this city week after week, Iโ€™ve designed this one-day route to show you Alicante’s soul โ€” not just its postcard views, but also its rhythm, stories and charm. Itโ€™s realistic, beautiful and totally doable (even in sandals, I promise!).

Morning: Castle views and a coffee by the sea

Start your day early at the Santa Bรกrbara Castle, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. You can take the elevator up from Postiguet beach or walk if you’re feeling brave. From the top, you get a 360ยฐ view of the sea, the mountains, and the whole city โ€” a must.

After soaking in the views, head back down and stroll along the Explanada de Espaรฑa, Alicanteโ€™s most iconic promenade, lined with palm trees and wavy tiles. Itโ€™s the perfect spot for a mid-morning coffee and maybe a sweet โ€œtostadaโ€ with tomato and olive oil.

Midday: Market colors and a taste of local life

Walk over to the Central Market (Mercado Central) โ€” a lively place full of fruit stands, fish counters and the smell of fresh bread. Even if you donโ€™t buy anything, the energy is worth the visit. This is where locals shop, chat, and grab a midday tapa.

Feeling hungry? Head to a local bar for a quick lunch: try a rice dish, fresh seafood, or some โ€œmontaditosโ€ (mini sandwiches) with a cold beer or โ€œtinto de veranoโ€.

Afternoon: Old town charm and Mediterranean vibes

Spend the afternoon exploring the old quarter โ€” known as El Barrio. This area is full of narrow alleys, colorful facades, flower pots, and hidden plazas. Youโ€™ll pass by San Nicolรกs Cathedral and the Town Hall, two beautiful historic buildings.

Want a break? Grab a horchata or an ice cream in the Santa Cruz area, the prettiest (and hilliest!) corner of the old town. If you’re up for a gentle climb, youโ€™ll be rewarded with stunning views over the rooftops and the sea.

Evening: Golden light and a last stroll

As the sun starts to go down, head back towards the marina. The golden hour here is magical. Locals come out for a walk, boats rock gently on the water, and the city feels alive but relaxed.

If you still have time, you can finish your day with a drink on a terrace or a walk on Postiguet Beach with your shoes in hand and the waves at your feet. It’s the perfect way to say goodbye โ€” or better yet, โ€œsee you soonโ€.
